The birth of Simon Jude

I'm always the first to make a postpartum momma-blogger feel bad about not cranking out their birth story 5.5 hours after the birth, so I appreciate your patience in waiting for this. I'm not really sure why it's taken so long. Just lazy, I guess.

Saturday, April 27th, we spent the most beautiful day working in the yard and cleaning the house (was I forcing myself to nest or was it all natural? I'll never know, but it worked). I took a nap after dinner and when I woke up at 6pm, I lifted my leg to stretch and felt the gush. But (TMI?) I wasn't convinced it was my water breaking because nothing else was going on.

We took Joan for a walk up and down the street (Charlotte was in LA with my parents for the week) and I kept leaking and having minor sporadic contractions. So, we called my friend Carmen, mother to Joan's friend Amelia, and asked if she could spend the night just in case I went into real labor.

I showered and gave Joan a bath, packed her things, and we brought her over to Carmen's house at 8pm. I was thisclose to having Carmen check to see how dilated I was (it's cool, she's a labor/delivery nurse), but she didn't have any sterile gloves, so... no go.

We got home, packed the hospital bag and tried to finish the season 2 finale of Sleeper Cell while I did a little nipple stimulation to get contractions going, if they were gonna go at all. After about 3 strong contractions I was ready to go to the hospital - I knew it was getting serious and I knew I shouldn't stay and labor at home anymore. All of a sudden I was like, "get in the van now. we need to leave now." Jude must have misheard me and thought I said, "let's go in a few minutes, after you make yourself a travel mug of chocolate milk," because that's what he did while I waited by the van (he makes up for this later).

9:45pm we arrive at the hospital and I'm 4cm dilated and 70% effaced.
10:45pm we start walking the hospital halls and I labor in the shower (best. idea. ever.), keeping up with nipple stimulation to keep contractions coming.
11:30pm I'm 7.5-8 cm and really starting to hurt.

That's when I started the mental debate over getting an epidural. And I'll be honest, remembering the pain from Charlotte's non-medicated birth and knowing that my friend Kaitlin was stalled at 9+cm for FOUR HOURS was terrifying me. In the middle of debating it with Jude and my nurse (who were both very encouraging that I was almost done and could just do without), I had 2 really terrible contractions and decided I was done and wanted the epidural.

12:10am Epidural time. I quickly felt some relief on my right side, but none on the left. We tried tilting me so it would run to the other side, but nothing. It seemed to taper the pain a little (because I wasn't screaming like with Charlotte), but then at some point it just seemed to stop working.

12:45am I threw up and was at 9cm with just a sliver left. My nurse slipped it over his head during a push and I was fully dilated. I was in a ton of pain, but still not feeling the urge to push. And I know my epidural didn't work because we started getting into different positions to get him lower and ready to push. We tried the birthing bar, the stirrups, the foot pedals, squatting on the bed, sitting up, lying down - obviously I wasn't feeling any help from the epidural or I wouldn't have been able to move around like I was.

It's important to mention here that I was extremely discouraged - I had finally consented to the pain meds and was expecting relief. When I didn't get that, I felt like I couldn't emotionally recover from the let down. In between contractions I would cry and say, "something's wrong. It's not supposed to feel this way."

My nurse said I handled the pain better when pushing and even though I wasn't feeling quite ready, I started the pushing process. We backed off for a while because I was getting exhausted, but came back to the pushing around 2:00am because nothing else was working.

I pushed for an eternity (one hour) and Jude had to fan me the entire time. The pushing was still mother-directed, because you know, I could feel every contraction very well. It was just like a movie. I was sweating and crying and breathing heavily and he was freezing and fanning me and saying, "C'mon! You can do this!" It must've been the chocolate milk, because he was incredible. But this was my second discouraging moment. I honestly thought my third would fly right out of me, and when he didn't, I again just couldn't get over it. It made the pushing so much worse, feeling like I was doing something wrong.

Then, finally at 3:00am, Simon Jude came out - super chill and alert, but not crying. After several reassurances that "he's fine," I believed the nurses, held him against me, and thanked God that was over.

And now, I thank God that the recovery part is over, because that was pretty terrible and the third time I was discouraged by this birth. But you don't need to worry about that. It's all over and we have a beautiful little boy.

A boy. Crazy.

What I Wore Sunday

This outfit (much like my mood and the weather at the moment) is just sort of... blah. And I apologize right now for not even attempting to compensate with something witty to read so at least your eyeballs don't drip out of your sockets. Sorry.

In case your eyeballs are still intact:
Dress: Old Navy maternity
Cardigan: Target
Shoes: Old Navy

Save yourself and head over for more fun at Fine Linen & Purple.

What I Wore Sunday

solids. solids. solids.

I'm pretty sure cardigans are a pregnant girl's best friend.
I should have done a separate photo for the shoes because they're by far the most interesting piece in this boring ensemble, but my swollen feet aren't doing them any favors...
Look at all that pollen. Yuck.

Cardigan: thrift store (probably someone's grandma's)
Tank: Old Navy (Certainly a summer must-have for any other preggos out there. It's long and stretchy. Yes, I wish the straps were wider and the cut a bit higher, but with a cardigan and some adjustments, it's really a great tank.)
Skirt: Hand-me-down from who-knows-where. I've had it since Joan's pregnancy.
Shoes: Guessing Target because they're Mossimo.
Necklace: Gift from Dear Friend Jill (that she made!). My fave.

Head over to Fine Linen & Purple for more style and less belly...

What I Wore Sunday & Easter Outfit OTI

It was so nice having my parents in town for Easter weekend - though I'm not sure "nice" is how they'd describe it... I was pretty grouchy and irritable. Many apologies, fam, especially since today is your birthday, mom. Hopefully your Lenten observations gave you much practice before you had to deal with my pregnitude. But as always, the kids soaked up as much grandparent spoils as they could before they left at noon.
Get the flash player here: http://www.adobe.com/flashplayer

Today I'm linking up with Grace and her faithful followers for Easter Outfit OTI and with Fine Linen & Purple for their What I Wore Sunday (tomorrow).

And good thing, because I look like an giant, dyed Easter egg...

See? Told ya.

Dress: Old Navy maternity. Sooo comfy and on sale!
Cardigan: free from a friend
Shoes: Payless

Hallelujah! He is Risen (and this post is published)!

What I Wore Sunday

We're kind of late posting for WIWS (hosted by the lovely ladies at Fine Linen & Purple), because we're opting for the 5:30 p.m. college Mass. Charlotte has been quarantined to the rug-less living room since Friday at noon in the hopes of learning to use the powder room like a true lady.

Day one of camp potty wasn't horrible, but wasn't great: 5 flushes, 4 cleanups.
Yesterday was much better: 10 flushes, 4 cleanups.
Today (as of 4:30), she seems to be getting the gist: 6 flushes, 2 cleanups.
Most of the cleanups involve poop, unfortunately, which I'm betting will take a while to master. And so far she's only going when we ask her to; she's still never decided to go on her own, but that's ok with me.

Ok, I'll stop pretending that that's what you came here for. Here's my lessthanstellar outfit (a little too casual for Palm Sunday than I'd prefer, but the weather's weird today and I'm reserving the nicer ones for Holy Week):

*gosh, I feel like I'm full of excuses today. what's with me?*

Thanks for stopping by and pretending to be interested in the potty training adventures of my 2.5 year old. Bless your heart.

7 Quick Takes

1. I sortakinda (butnotreally) feel bad about unloading on you guys a few days ago. Sometimes, this nice clean white blog gets a little dirty. But if it makes you feel better, yesterday and today have been worlds better.

2. Not sure why today is better, though, because it's cold and rainy and officially potty training boot camp day. The run-down?
2:20 - pee in the toilet
2:25 - accident while eating reward candy
2:50 - accident 5 minutes before I planned on making her try
3:15 - sat, but no pee
3:40 - accident 5 minutes before I planned on making her try
4:00 - sat, but no pee
4:15 - sat, but no pee
And every moment in between:

3. I know there are lots of opinions on how to potty train, so my expectations for this weekend of nakedness are pretty low. We didn't have to do this for Joan, but I kind of think Charlotte needs a different approach since the whole I want to please my parents just because isn't really her style...

4. I haven't even mentioned that we took a Spring Break trip to LA last week to see some fam and left the girls with my parents for three days. I still had to babysit little Evelyn, but the biological break was so nice!

brothers.

ice cream truck treats from uncle mark

Big Poppa & Tootsie

Papa John & Madelyn (sorry Gigi, not sure why I don't have a record of you being around - we all know you were there!)

5. Charlotte regularly asks me in the van to, "talk more about Jesus is dead," and wants a list of names of the people who hurt him.

6. I'm currently eating a shrimp pasta bowl that reminds me of that pasta place on Louisiana Tech's campus - inside Tolliver. Remember that place, Jill and Sara? Yum. And remember when we went on that crazy fast and at midnight on the last day, I had a 20 oz chocolate milk and 2 bags of peanut M&Ms? I heart college.

7. Struggling to find a last one, here. So let's just put us both out of our misery and call it quits. But not before you head over to Jen for the others...

since no one's ever been pregnant before.

whelp. i'm done.

i can't take another day of flammable breath, or
swollen feet that barely fit into my cutest spring shoes, or
not being able to wear my wedding ring, or
being kicked in the who-who from within, or
almost peeing myself during a cough, sneeze, or laugh, or
having a foot stuck between two ribs, or
not being able to fill my lungs with life-saving oxygen, or
exhausting my grocery budget on toilet paper for each 2.3 oz trip to the loo, or
hearing, "wow, it must be any day, now," or
taking 13 minutes to get up from the couch, toss in bed, or put on sandals, or
not fitting into a shirt I wore yesterday, or
mood swings that could get me committed. this might be one of them...

good thing i have 45+ days left and one patient husband.

What I Wore Sunday

No, I didn't wear green today in honor of St. Patrick. But if you want to challenge the wardrobe of an eight month pregnant lady, be my guest.
No, it's not the angle of the camera, or a weird lean I'm doing. It's not the chevron playing tricks on you - my belly button is not centered. It never is. And now that I can't hide the fact that I'm pregnant anymore (at least from the front), get used to the button. It might need it's own blog.
It has its own nosey-nosey partner.

And you might as well go ahead and forget this outfit, because it'll probably make several reappearances in the future - too cute and comfy not to - and we wouldn't want you getting bored with my ever-thrilling maternity closet.

Cardigan: in a gifted bag of clothes meant to be repurposed
Tank: Maternity from Old Navy - long and stretchy with no ruching!
Maxi Skirt: Maternity from Old Navy. Fold over yoga waist band? Yes, please.
Coral flats: Old Navy clearance last year. Favorite. Shoes. Ever.

Head over for the others at Fine Linen & Purple!

Making things make life better: Tunic alteration

Love the top. Hate the bottom of this shirt from Old Navy (now only $8!).

I look like a giant pregnant parachute.

So... I cut off a few inches of the bottom, folded it in half and sewed it back on a bit smaller than it was to create a band for the bottom.

And now I just look pregnant.

What I Wore Sunday

I did indeed wear jeans to church this morning, but I more than made up for it by choosing the appropriate liturgical color. And that's all we'll say about that.

I'm still mad that I'm not in flip flops & a skirt. Putting on socks and boots is becoming increasingly more difficult by the minute. But we all have our crosses...

Button down: stolen from Jude's closet and was *this* close to losing a button around the mid-region, if you get my drift.
Sweater: Old Navy maternity
Jeans: Old Navy maternity
Boots: Piperlime

31 Weeks, baby!
Thanks for hosting Fine Linen & Purple!

What I Wore Sunday

Joining the crowd over at Fine Linen & Purple again.

This week, I'm killing two birds with one stone (why is that a phrase? who's ever really done that?), and posting my 30 week preg-pic along with my WIWS pic. Hopefully this is the last of the winter attire I'll have to wear until next year because I'm super ready for the elastic waist skirts & flip flops coming down the horizon. (I must be in denial about having to shave my legs with a 8-9 month belly in the way, but we'll cross that bridge when we get there. Again, why is that a phrase? Of course you're going to cross a bridge when you get there. Duh.)

Dress: Liz Lange maternity, handmedown from a friend
Scarf: Gift from dear friend Jill
Tights: Amazon
Boots: same old, same old from Shoe Department

Long sleeve shirt: Old Navy maternity
Jeans: Old Navy maternity

Happy Sunday Funday. Come back soon!

Thursday, February 21, 2013

You guys,

I'm in such a rut.

Not the I'm tired of cooking the same thing rut.

Not the I hate everything in my closet rut.

Not the I need a new hobby or something else to do rut.

Or any of those other, very natural, ruts we phase in and out of over the years.

No, my rut seems to be more of a stress-rut turned hopeless-rut. Like, I know exactly what I want to happen and I feel like it's God's will, but I can't fathom how it's realistic at all. So I get stressed and then hopeless.

I'm a stay at home mom, and we want that. We also want to send Joan to Catholic school next fall and we've been given God's peace about that decision. But whether it's my higher (pregnancy-induced) stress & anxiety level or the very real impending tax season (apparently it's not good to be forgiven $44,000 of debt according to the IRS) - I can't seem to shake the worry that our decision might be too costly to pull off.

We've come so far - financially - through hard work, tight budgets, and the generosity of others. And to pay for school, owe the IRS (which we'll find out soon if that's the case), and end my extra income in May (Evelyn's family is moving to Canada & I'm having a baby...), it's making it very difficult to understand how we'll make this all work and continue moving ahead financially. Especially over the future years.

Now, I believe in the power of God. And I have witnessed firsthand His provision. So it's easy to tell myself that it will all work out and things will fall into place if this is His will. But man, I cannot shake the worry, the doubt, the confusion, or the discouragement at the moment. It would be nice to just blame this on pregnancy hormones, but these are very legitimate concerns and I'm not sure how to battle them.

So, I'm not really sure where to go from here - how to wrap this up. But I'd like to know I'm not completely crazy for honestly questioning our budget and how this will work. Or completely crazy for trusting God to figure it out and make it happen. How do I get these two to cooperate?

I might just need a glass of wine or a long bath, but I gave it up for Lent - the bath, that is - not the wine. I gave that up for Simon.

What I Wore Sunday

Animal print isn't really my thing, so we're going to call these stripes. Although if I find another article of animal print that makes me look this un-pregnant from the front, imabuyit. I mean, don't I look photoshopped?! (Mental note: wear this everyday.)

Ah, there's that 29 week belly.

Sweater: non-maternity from consignment store
(which might actually be a dress...)
Black undershirt: Liz Lange from Target
Skinny Pants: Old Navy maternity
Boots: Blowfish

Thanks to the ladies at Fine Linen & Purple for hosting!

What I Wore Sunday

We're having a great weekend with Jude's parents. They came to visit yesterday and brought a King Cake from Louisiana with them - so a great weekend indeed. Someone needs to let Charlotte know that it's a great weekend, though. She didn't get the memo...

Ugh, you guys. I'm huge. Stop lying to my face - you know I am. I'm only 28 weeks pregnant. That's it. And I am so nervous about how my body is going to handle another 12+ weeks of growth. Pray for me.

Dress: hand-me-down from a friend's maternity bag
Cardi?: No Boundaries - so that means Wal-Mart, right? It's like 17 years old.
Tights: Maternity from Target
Boots: Payless
Belt: new from Old Navy - they have a ton of stretchy skinny belts right now!

Thanks Fine Linen & Purple for hosting.

Nesting is expensive.

What else are you gonna do at 26 weeks pregnant with left over Christmas money? Buy a bunch of new stuff for the babes, rearrange their rooms, and wait the rest of the 14+ weeks in penniless boredom?

Exactly.

The playroom-guestroom has been converted into a nursery with a spare bed and the girls' room is currently housing all the fun stuff. (a long time ago they looked like this)

More recently, when Charlotte moved into a toddler bed, it looked like this:
but with dressers, a bookshelf, and a glider. I know.
These rooms are huge.

Now for the AFTERS...

We're going with this arrangement for a while. Until the next random bout of nesting strikes again.

We splurged on these FLOR carpet tiles that were on sale and alternated the pattern. We. Love. Them. And if we want, we can reshape them into a rectangular rug.

I'm sorry Tootsie, that Charlotte has destroyed the heirloom table.
It was my fault for painting it white. It will be cleaned up when she's 18.
The empty space before felt awkward with a regular rug and the ones we had were way too small anyway.

The house.
Now they have paths to their beds and in their little nooks.
The school.
The catch-all.
Seriously, the space is mind boggling.

Now for the little man's room:

Jude edited his bike poster (go buy one) to match the hipster bedding, purchased by the grands (thanks!) and to fit in the frames.

I sewed this cover, which is not quite done, to go over the changing pad. Kaitlin, I think that pirate shirt was yours?

Still plenty of space, if anyone wants to visit. Yes, you will be in charge of nightly feedings.

Some fun prints from this designer.

Apparently, this is his favorite owned print that you can find here.

outta money & outta space. the next 14+ weeks should be uhmazing.

What I Wore Sunday

Back for another installment with the Lords & Ladies (so ready for Downton tonight) of Fine Linen & Purple.

Dress: Old Navy clearance rack a few years ago.
It was always ill-fitting and slightly too big. Until I got pregnant.
Cardigan: Target
Scarf: can't recall, but I think it was a gift
Tights: Amazon
Boots: New purchase from Payless c/o the gift card from my sis

You didn't think you'd be leaving without a full bump report, did you?
Shirt: Old Navy (I'm the idiot that didn't buy the maternity version of this shirt, but they're both on sale now)
Jeans: Old Navy

And bonus:

This is the trash my yard wore this morning. Who does that?
